Bailiffs

This bailiff directory helps you identify enforcement companies, understand what type of debts they may enforce, and check your rights before you agree to a payment arrangement.

Bailiffs are now usually called enforcement agents. They may be instructed for debts such as council tax arrears, parking penalties, business rates, court judgments or commercial rent arrears. Their powers depend on the debt type and the stage of enforcement.

What to do if bailiffs contact you

  1. Read the notice carefully and check the debt type, creditor, reference number and deadline.
  2. Ask for identification if an enforcement agent visits.
  3. Do not agree to a payment plan you cannot afford.
  4. Keep priority bills such as rent, mortgage, council tax, food and utilities at the front of your budget.
  5. Get debt advice quickly if you have received a notice of enforcement or signed a controlled goods agreement.

If enforcement is part of a wider debt problem, compare council tax debt options, IVAs, Debt Relief Orders and Debt Management Plans.

If you are still at the collector or solicitor warning stage, read the debt collector letter before action guide before the issue escalates into court judgment or enforcement.

What bailiffs cannot usually do on a first visit

For council tax and most civil debts, enforcement agents usually cannot force entry on a first visit. They should show identification, explain the debt and fees, and follow the correct notice process. Keep doors locked while you check paperwork and get advice if you are unsure.

Rules can differ for High Court enforcement, criminal fines, HMRC debts, business premises and cases where a controlled goods agreement has already been signed. If you are unsure which stage you are at, treat the notice as urgent.

When to seek urgent debt advice

Get advice quickly if you have received a notice of enforcement, an enforcement agent has visited, a vehicle has been clamped, you are vulnerable, or you cannot afford the payment demanded. If the debt is part of a wider problem, compare IVA, DRO, DMP and council options before enforcement fees increase.

Common enforcement stages

Most enforcement cases start with a compliance stage letter or notice. This is usually the cheapest point to act because a visit has not yet added the larger enforcement-stage fee. If the case moves to a visit, the agent may ask for payment in full, a payment arrangement, or a controlled goods agreement.

If you cannot pay, focus on the debt type first. Council tax, parking penalties, High Court enforcement and court fines can have different rules, fees and complaint routes. The company guide below can help you identify who is contacting you, but free debt advice is still important if the debt is urgent or unaffordable.
